Duplicate any track with Command-D, then resize and rearrange your session by holding Shift while dragging.

When recording layered tracks, only record-arm the track you actually want capturing input. Recording two tracks at once, or forgetting which one is armed, is an easy way to end up with the wrong instrument on tape.
