This Ableton Live walkthrough shows how to draw automation directly onto a track using breakpoints, instead of recording it in real time. Pick a device from the Device Chooser, then select the parameter you want to control underneath it. An unautomated parameter shows up as a dotted red line, ready for you to click and shape.
Clicking anywhere on that line drops a breakpoint, and dragging it up or down sets the value at that point in the arrangement. Breakpoints snap to the grid by default, which keeps your automation moves lined up with the beat.
When you need finer control than the grid allows, hold Cmd on Mac or Alt on Windows while dragging a breakpoint to place it freely. This gives you the precision to shape subtle fades, sweeps, or expressive moves that don't fit neat rhythmic divisions.
