Nathan James Larsen shows how to fix uneven vocal dynamics in Logic Pro before compression ever touches the track. When one phrase in a take is much louder than the rest, a compressor squashes the loud part hard while barely touching the quiet part, leaving inconsistent, uneven results.
Using the Marquee tool, isolate the loud phrase and pull down its region gain until the peaks roughly match the quieter surrounding sections. Eyeballing the waveform is enough, no need to get overly precise.
With the levels balanced beforehand, compression hits more evenly across the whole vocal, giving you a smoother, more consistent result without fighting inconsistent gain staging later.
