Ableton's Learn Live series breaks down Frequency Shifting mode in Shifter, focusing on what makes it fundamentally different from pitch shifting: rather than transposing audio while preserving harmonic ratios, it moves all frequencies up or down by a fixed number of hertz, which breaks those relationships entirely.
Larger shift amounts produce dissonant, metallic textures that work well for percussion design or sound effects. Smaller amounts, blended with the dry signal, create subtle phasing that can add movement and width without obvious pitch change.
Frequency shifting also turns out to be a practical tool for drum tuning. Because it shifts by a fixed offset rather than scaling harmonically, it can nudge a drum's pitch without altering its overall tonal character the way pitch shifting might.
