This Bitwig tutorial segment walks through the full setup process for integrating a hardware synthesizer into a Bitwig Studio session, from physical connections to a working, latency-compensated instrument track. The presenter covers both MIDI and audio routing, including traditional 5-pin DIN cables and USB MIDI for modern synths.
Once connections are in place, the HW Instrument device in Bitwig handles everything on the software side: selecting the MIDI port, setting the MIDI channel (channel 1 by default on most devices), and routing the synth's audio output back into the session through the device's return section.
For setups without a keyboard, MIDI controllers can be activated in Bitwig's Settings under Controllers, and MPE controllers are supported via a dedicated toggle on the HW Instrument device. Pressing Caps Lock lets you play any synth directly from your computer keyboard. Multiple synths can be controlled independently by assigning each a unique MIDI channel on both the hardware and in Bitwig.
External hardware introduces latency as audio travels out and back through the interface. Bitwig's automatic latency compensation handles this with a single click, and finer timing adjustments are available through the Time Shift device or the Time Offset function built into the HW Instrument device.
