This walkthrough covers a set of Ableton Live shortcuts for shaping automation in Arrangement View, useful once you're past basic volume or filter sweeps and want tighter control over how a parameter moves over time. Press A to toggle Automation Mode on and off without digging through menus.
To place an exact value at a specific point, right-click the automation line and choose Add Value, then type the number directly instead of eyeballing a breakpoint's position. Existing breakpoints can be corrected the same way through Edit Value, and holding Shift while dragging a breakpoint or tweaking a device parameter slows the movement down for finer, more precise adjustments.
For curves rather than straight lines between points, hover over a segment until it highlights blue, then hold Alt (Option on Mac) and drag to bend it into a curve. This is handy for automation that should ease in or out rather than snap linearly, like a filter sweep or volume fade with more natural motion.
If you don't want to shape a curve by hand, select a time range in the automation lane, right-click, and pick from a set of predefined curve shapes to apply instantly.
