MusicTechHelpGuy uses a kick drum in Logic Pro's Compressor to demonstrate three tools most people skip past: the built-in limiter, distortion, and the Mix knob.
The limiter is basically compression at an infinite ratio, nothing gets past the threshold. He rarely reaches for it on peaks though, since pulling back makeup gain usually does the job cleaner.
The Distortion unit adds soft, hard, or full clipping to transients. On drums this roughens up the peaks just enough to give each hit more definition and punch, with soft clipping standing out as the most useful setting.
The real payoff is the Mix knob, which blends compressed and dry signal for parallel compression without any sends or aux tracks. This lets you slam the kick with aggressive compression, then dial back the blend until the punch of the compressed signal sits on top of the natural body and tone of the dry one.
