This excerpt from Ableton's Learn Live series walks through the modulation system inside Roar, Live 12's saturation and coloring device. The presenter sets up a comb filter with resonance as the starting patch, then opens the modulation tab to show how the matrix connects sources to destinations.
Roar's modulation section offers two LFOs, an envelope follower, and a noise generator. The LFOs can be shaped and morphed, run synced to the project tempo or free, and assigned to multiple targets simultaneously, including filter frequency and shaper amount. A global depth control at the bottom of the matrix scales all active modulations at once, and clearing assignments is a single click.
The envelope follower segment shows how to drive filter movement from an incoming signal, using a kick drum to open and close a low-frequency filter in time with the transients. Gain on the follower pushes the effect harder, making the dynamic relationship between the input signal and the filter more pronounced.
The noise generator rounds out the tour with four modes: Simplex, Wander, Sample and Hold, and Brown Noise. Sample and Hold produces a stepped random pattern, and the rate and smoothing controls shape how abruptly or gradually it moves between values.
