Sage Audio demonstrates an alternative approach when vocals still sound weak, far back, or lifeless after compression: using a waveshaper to apply upward compression. Rather than reaching for more downward compression, which can alter the vocal's timbre as a side effect, this method amplifies only the quieter amplitude range while leaving peaks untouched.
The distinction is about what each tool changes. Downward compression works top-down and affects the whole dynamic relationship. Applying upward compression through a waveshaper lifts quieter details without touching the louder parts, so presence comes forward without shifting the character of the signal.
The demonstration uses Melda Audio's free waveshaper, where a custom curve lets you define exactly which amplitude range gets boosted and where the signal returns to a 1:1 input-to-output relationship. The Sonnox Oxford Inflator covers similar ground with less manual control.
